Illustration rates hinge on two things most beginners underprice: a distinctive style and the rights the client is buying. When a client hires an illustrator, they are choosing a specific voice they cannot get elsewhere, and they are licensing how widely they can use the work. Both deserve to be priced.

Style is the rate lever. Interchangeable, on-trend work competes with stock and marketplaces; a recognisable, hard-to-copy style lets you set your own number because the client wants you specifically. Investing in a strong, consistent portfolio is, in pricing terms, an investment in your rate.

Usage and licensing are where illustrators leave money behind. A spot illustration for a blog is worth a fraction of the same image used on packaging seen by millions. Quote the creation fee and the usage license as separate lines, and revisit the license if the client’s usage expands. Add productised income, selling prints, brushes or assets on a marketplace, and you turn the same skill into revenue that does not depend on the next commission.

What should a beginner illustrator charge?

Junior rates commonly run $30 to $55 per hour. Resist going below this to win work; competing on price attracts the worst clients.

How do illustrator rates vary by region?
